The Grome Lab seeks to expand upon the research that Michael Grome conducted at Yale with recoding E. coli to recognize only one stop codon and engineering a UAA specific release factor. At UGA, we will explore the functions of exogenous and synthetic release factors, adaptive plant synthetic biology, algal biomanufacturing, bio-contained organisms, non-canonical amino acid incorporation, and synthetic protein constructs. Applications include preventing the release of modified organisms, expression of unique drugs and antibiotics, novel protein structures and functions, independent metabolic pathways, and unique crop constructs for synthetic pathways.
